What is RTT9-1-1?
Real-time text is a new feature that lets cell phone users send messages as they are typed.
In Canada, RTT will only be used only for 9-1-1 services. When the feature is available, the call taker will be able to see the words as you type (in “real time”) and will answer back at the same time by using voice or typed messages. RTT it is more like a regular conversation because you don’t have to wait for a complete message to be sent before you can see it.
RTT9-1-1 is NOT the same as SMS texting or instant messaging. Texting or instant messaging 9-1-1 will not work.
Can I use RTT9-1-1 now?
No. RTT9-1-1 functionality is expected to be available in mid to late 2028. Since this is a new feature, it is important that it is tested before it is available to everyone.
Who can use RTT9-1-1?
RTT9-1-1 can be used by anyone with a compatible cell phone. It will be an important tool for people who are in the Deaf, Hard of Hearing, or Speech Impaired (DHHSI) community because it will let them type their emergency to 9-1-1. It will also useful when it is unsafe to speak during an emergency.
Important tip:
Real-time text is not currently available in Canada. Once it becomes available it will support RTT messages to 9-1-1 call centres only. Information about compatible devices and instructions for how to use RTT will be provided closer to its launch!
